The 2011 Barbados International Junior Championships concluded yesterday with two unseeded pairings contesting the U18s boys doubles final. Grenadian Yannick James and Barbadian Matthew Hutchinson lost to the British pairing of Thomas Colautti and Callum Poland-Smith 2-6, 1-6 at the National Tennis Centre.
Colautti the # 6 seed had earlier taken the U18s boys singles with a convincing 6-3, 6-4 win against #2 seed Jhonatan Gonzalez of Venezuela.
In the girls U18 singles #1 seed Russian Kristina Chasovskikh defeated compatriot #2 seed Renata Arshavskaya 6-1, 7-6 in a match with lengthy and exciting base line rallies which lasted more than an hour and a half.
After a short rest, Renata and twin sister Adel then went on to win the girls doubles final against Kristina who teamed up with Canadian Catherine Leduc in another very long match eventually triumphing 7-5, 6-7 (5), 10-6.
Yannick James won the award for the Most Improved Player, while in addition to winning the boys singles and doubles, Colautti was awarded the 2011 Barbados International Junior Championships Sportsmanship Award.
In the U14s event, the Girls U14s was won by Ceijenia Cornelius of the USA , while Ethan Ammon of Trinidad won the U14s Boys singles.
